Mapping Canada's grid, one layer at a time
Behind the Canada Grid Atlas: how we combined power-plant, transmission, substation and live-price data into one fast, explorable map of the country's electricity system.
The electricity system is the largest machine on the continent, yet it is remarkably hard to see. We built the Canada Grid Atlas to change that: an interactive map that brings power plants, transmission, substations, data centers and provincial prices into one place.
Layers of a living system
- 1,159 power plants totalling about 144 GW, coloured by fuel and sized by capacity
- More than 130,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines
- Thousands of substations and major data-center loads
- Live wholesale prices from Ontario's IESO and Alberta's AESO
Each layer answers a different question: where power is made, how it moves, where new loads are landing, and what it costs right now. Together they make the invisible grid explorable for students, planners and citizens alike.
You cannot manage what you cannot see. Making the grid legible is the first step to decarbonizing it.
